Business Studies
Intent Statement
"Opportunities don't happen, you create them."
Chris Grosser
At St Andrew's, the Business Department is committed to providing a curriculum that inspires enterprise, financial understanding and real-world commercial awareness. Our curriculum intent is centred around the following key areas:
- Enterprise & Innovation
We want students to think like entrepreneurs, spotting opportunities, understanding risk, and developing the creativity and resilience needed to turn an idea into a viable venture.
- Financial & Commercial Literacy
We believe every student benefits from understanding how businesses operate financially, from budgeting and cash flow to profit and investment returns, skills that are valuable both academically and in everyday life.
- Real-World Application
Our curriculum is grounded in real, recognisable businesses and current events, helping students see the direct relevance of what they learn to the wider economy and the world of work.
- Aspiration & Progression
We aim to raise students' aspirations by exposing them to a wide range of career pathways in business, finance and management, and by preparing them for further study at Key Stage 5 and beyond.
By embracing these key areas, we strive to equip our students with the confidence, commercial awareness and financial understanding to succeed both in further study and in the wider world of work.
Key stage 3
Business Studies is not currently a discrete Key Stage 3 subject at St Andrew's. Students are introduced to business and enterprise concepts through our entitlement curriculum where they will complete an “Enterprise” unit of work. They also experience business concepts through cross-curricular links, Business Day during Year 8 enrichment week and taster sessions in Year 9, helping to inform their choices at Key Stage 4.
Key stage 4
At GCSE, students can choose to study Business (AQA). The course covers key areas of business activity, including business operations, marketing, finance, and human resources, developing students' ability to analyse real business scenarios and make informed, evidence-based decisions. The course is well-established within the department, with consistently strong outcomes, and provides a solid foundation for further study in business, economics or related fields at Key Stage 5.
